Sneaking out at night

I’ve not yet finished writing about Valentine’s night. So my mom took my laptop (Viros) away and I REALLY wanted to contact my online friend DC, cuz I sent him my story I wrote about us meeting at the Valentine’s Dance and I HAD to know his reaction to it. I was SO desperate to get online that I decided to sneak out…
Just when I’m pretty sure everyone is asleep and exhausted from the day’s events (my breakdown, going swimming, etc) I put my plan into action. I’m exhausted from the day’s events too, but wide awake with adrenaline. The nervousness has been keeping me alert, but if I wait any longer the internet cafe will be closed, so at 10:45pm I get out of bed and slowly open my bedroom door.

Everything is quiet and still, except for the never ending traffic noise outside. I stop at the front door for a second to review my list of why this sneaking out plan isn’t as bad as a regular sneaking out plan normally is. I don’t condone sneaking out of course, but the internet cafe I’m heading for is only two doors down from our building. The staff know me there, and I’m not trying to be rebellious, I’m just desperate to get on line. And… and.. well I thought there were more logical reasons to justify my plan but I guess there aren’t. I think about turning back. But I’ve run down to the cafe at night so many times to get my mom a decaf mocha that it just doesn’t seem like a big deal. I’ll just tell her I must have dreampt she asked me to go get her a coffee and thought it was real.
I go to our front door and close it gently behind me, then I tip toe down the stairs (you can hear everything in these drafty office buildings). It’s cold outside, really, really cold, especially since I didn’t bring a jacket and came out in my slippers! When I reach the cafe doors the girl is turning the open sign to closed! So I bang on the door and scare her. She waves the closed sign a bit at me and walks away. I can’t believe it! There’s at least ten more minutes before they close. My toes hurt from the piercing cold. Sandra, the manager lady, sees me standing outside and walks over with a disappointed look. She unlatches the door and opens it.
“What on earth are you doing out there without a jacket?” She looks down. “And no shoes!” I barge in, which is a little out of character for me but my frozen toes make me do it.
“Honey we shut down the coffee machines…”
“I really need to go on line, please.” I plead.
“Mandy did we shut those computers off?”
Mandy, the same girl who wiggled the closed sign at me, is in the process of shutting the computers down and has already turned two off, with two left to go. I rush over to the last computer. I cannot believe that she attempts to turn it off while I’m sitting in front of it! I push her hand away.
“Just leave it Mandy.” Sandra sighs and returns to her mopping.
“There’s ten more minutes.” I say between gritted teeth. The girl smirks at me and walks away. I turn to Sandra. “I’m sorry but it’s important, my computer is… not running right now.”
“We all want to get home before the weather gets any worse so make it quick.” Sandra heads to the back with her mop, “I’m mopping the kitchen floor then we’re leaving.”
“Ok. What’s today’s password?”
Then I’m finally on line.
The last thing DC has said is,
DC -Wow. I didn’t know you fantasized about me.”
That’s all there is. Then he writes as soon as he sees I’m on line too.
DC -Hi
ME -Hi
-I shouldn’t have sent that story.
DC -Why?
ME -I just like to write, I didn’t want to make anything different.
DC -Different?
ME -Between us.
DC -It’s not.
ME -You sure?
DC -I don’t think so, is it?
ME -The real dance was a lot more boring.
DC -How did the blind date thing turn out?
There are banging sounds coming from the kitchen as Sandra mops, which reminds me my time is limited.
ME -I can’t talk long.
DC -?
ME -Mom took Viros away, long story, and I came to an internet cafe which is almost closed.
DC -This late?
ME -I snuck out…
DC -really!
ME -Its not like me, I know.
DC -Were you worried about what I thought of the story?
ME -A bit.
DC -Your cell phone still missing?
ME -Yeah.
DC -I need to tell you something.
So I wait. It sounds like Sandra is packing away her mop already.
ME -Yes? …
DC -I’ve got something for you too.
ME -A story? File?
DC -Not a file.
ME -Yes Sir…
(Mandy is lurking in the background)
DC -I wish we had time to talk.
ME -What is it?
DC -I decided I should tell you
-About me.
Sandra comes out of nowhere and stands behind me, her hands on her hips.
ME -Yes Sir. Have to go.
DC -Tomorrow.
ME -Email me? I’ll check at school.
DC -C U tomorrow k?
Sandra is tapping her foot so I can’t think about why DC said “see you tomorrow” rather than ttyt “talk to you tomorrow.”
ME -Ok DC, till tomorrow.
I sign out.
I make it home undetected somehow (unless my mom is letting me get away with it, but I don’t think so) and my toes just can NOT warm up. But I fall asleep pretty quick and then Friday happens, .. and thank goodness I have no school all week. DC is supposedly in Jamaica with his parents for Reading Week. Ya right! I don’t think he’s in Jamaica, I think he’s sulking and not writing me.. more on that tomorrow. I’m supposed to help make mashed potatoes tonight for supper (and I did get Viros back btw, that’s how I’m writing now 🙂
